Background

Dr. Di Toppa attended the University of Alberta, earning a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1971 and M.D. in 1973. He completed a one-year internship at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia in June 1974. Following this he did two years of general practice in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1976, he entered residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Alberta and wrote his fellowship in Otolaryngology in 1980. After his formal fellowship in Otolaryngology he did extra training in facial cosmetic surgery in Rome, Italy in 1982. He studied otology in Zurich, Switzerland and then completed further training in Bone Anchored Hearing Aid care in Sweden in 1990. He has been working with the Baha program since 1990. He is a surgeon at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM).

At the present, Dr. Di Toppa practices general otolaryngology out of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the University of Alberta Hospital and iRSM at the Misericordia Hospital. His practice includes otology, head and neck oncology, cosmetic facial surgery, laser surgery and osseointegration.

Academic positions include Assistant-Professor of Surgery at the University of Alberta in Otolaryngology. He is a preceptor for residents training at the University of Alberta and he is the past President of the Alberta Society of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
